Traditionally, baby shower is supposed to be thrown with the first baby of the family. The function of this party other than celebrating the near birth of a little angel is for the women to impart their knowledge and share instructions on motherhood skills. Over the years, this trend was outdated – instead of celebrating for the first born child alone, baby shower party is also being held for the successive child or even for the adopted kids as well.

There has been a rage discussion whether a baby shower party should only be hosted for a first-timer mom; after all she may have all the baby necessities she needs. On the other hand, seconds, thirds, or fourths they are still pregnant and will still be giving a birth to a new baby is that worthy enough of a celebration?
So as not to be greedy, instead of hosting a baby shower why not have a sprinkle party? A sprinkle party is just like the traditional baby shower party with the sumptuous food while socializing and having lots of fun but a little more casual and gifts are very much low keyed which is a perfect compromise.

Is it not a bit unfair that the mother to be gets a chance to celebrate the near birth of the baby yet the father is not allowed in the baby shower? Even though the father to be is sometimes allowed to be in the party, men don’t usually enjoy the traditional baby shower party. Would you expect them to be as enthusiast as the ladies in scrap booking, making quilt, cooing over a tiny baby clothes? I guess not.

There has been a new trend that is slowly but surely gaining popularity of its own, now even the expectant grandmother gets to have her baby shower as well. The idea of a grandmother baby shower is almost the same with the traditional baby shower party for the expectant mom. There are foods, gifts and activities, too. The activities would usually gander around blanket making, sewing baby garments, you know granny sort of activities. For the gift, the grandmother cannot do cash or gift registry as it would be quite tacky for them to ask specifically what they want even though they are the primary caretaker of the baby. And just like the conventional baby shower, grandma herself cannot throw the baby shower herself. Her friends, colleagues, family, neighbors or anyone she knows but not her.

I have attended a baby shower of an Asian-Indian couple that is amidst an American community. It’s amazing how they put up a baby shower with a touch of each culture but it still follows the general theme of a baby shower that is to welcome the soon birth of the baby in celebration and by congratulating the mother-to-be for carrying the baby in her womb.
